A coordinated drone attack on Monday hit five power stations and substations in Sudan – two in Al-Jazira state, two in Gedaref and one in White Nile state. A government official told AFP that large parts of all three states lost power. The state electricity company reported "severe damage" and warned that grid stability was under threat.

Authorities blame the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which did not comment; the claim has not been independently verified. The affected states are controlled by the army, which has been at war with the RSF since April 2023. A resident of Gedaref told AFP that his diabetic son needs refrigerated insulin.

The U.N. has warned that attacks on power stations threaten health services for millions. The U.N. human rights office counted 306 people killed by drone strikes in Sudan in the first three weeks of October. Nearly 20 million people there face acute hunger.
