Star Trek: Outposts Unknown launched on PC via Steam on October 20; it was developed by Magic Fuel Games and published by Playstack. The colony sim is set in the 23rd century, in the era of the series Strange New Worlds: as commander of the U.S.S. Resonant, players build research outposts on three planets in the X’Lehari system to investigate a mysterious Tetryon Rift. That means gathering, refining and transporting 55 resources, planning shifts and shielding the bases from radiation with shield generators. On Steam the game costs $32.99.
Only a few reviews have been published so far. Stadion Gaming gives it 7 out of 10, praising the warm Star Trek mood, the likeable crew of specialists who improve over time and the satisfying production chains. NoobFeed gives it just 58 out of 100, but also highlights tricorder-based exploration, the fitting music and stable performance.
The main criticism is the pace: gathering, hauling and building take too long, with too little to do in between, according to NoobFeed, which also cites clumsy menus and small text. Stadion Gaming misses the depth of genre role models such as RimWorld or Surviving Mars and finds the story too restrictive. Both consider the price high – NoobFeed advises waiting for a discount. A Mac version has been promised in a later update.
