US distributor Independent Film Company has released the first trailer for 'Tangles'. The animated film follows a young artist who returns to her family as Alzheimer's disease begins to change her mother's personality. The trailer shows mostly hand-drawn black-and-white images with occasional touches of colour.
It is based on artist Sarah Leavitt's 2010 autobiographical graphic novel 'Tangles: A Story About Alzheimer's, My Mother and Me'. Leah Nelson makes her feature debut as director and co-wrote the script with Leavitt and Trev Renney. Abbi Jacobson voices the daughter Sarah, Julia Louis-Dreyfus the mother Midge and Bryan Cranston the father, alongside Beanie Feldstein, Seth Rogen, Samira Wiley, Sarah Silverman, Wanda Sykes, Bowen Yang and Pamela Adlon.
'Tangles' screened as a special screening in Cannes in May and later won the Sebastiane Award in San Sebastián. After an Oscar-qualifying run in New York from 27 November, it opens in select US cinemas on 15 January 2027 and nationwide on 22 January. No German release date has been set.
