Unknown attackers blew up an ATM on the platform of the Gneisenaustrasse subway station in Berlin's Kreuzberg district overnight into Monday. According to police, two men allegedly sprayed several surveillance cameras with paint at around 2:30 a.m., then fed gas into the freestanding machine and ignited it. The ATM was badly damaged.
Police said it was still unclear whether the perpetrators got away with any cash. The suspects have not been identified. A specialist unit of the State Criminal Police Office has taken over the investigation.
The station was closed to passengers for nearly three hours while evidence was secured. Until around 7 a.m., BVG trains passed through without stopping, dpa reported.
