Hundreds of people gathered at Marseille's Old Port on Monday evening to protest against racism. Police estimated the crowd at 800, while organisers put it at more than 1,000. The rally was called by an anti-racism coalition, trade unions and local groups. Protesters carried placards condemning racial hatred.
It followed a shooting three days earlier in Trappes and neighbouring La Verrière, southwest of Paris. A gunman opened fire on passers-by, killing one person and wounding five others, including a 12-year-old girl. Prosecutors are investigating the attack as a suspected racist terrorist act. A 39-year-old suspect was arrested shortly afterwards in Coignières.
