Brandenburg Interior Minister Jan Redmann says interest from Berlin applicants in joining the state's police force is growing. "This phenomenon is increasing right now," the Christian Democrat told the German Press Agency dpa, without giving figures. In late September, Redmann used Instagram to target police recruits from Berlin and Saxony-Anhalt.
Brandenburg's CDU tied the campaign to political criticism, saying in a post that Berlin's Left Party was driving police officers away and pointing to 115 new patrol cars for Brandenburg. Berlin's GdP police union voiced concern. Applications for training starting in April 2027 close on Dec. 31.
The Left Party came first in Berlin's state election in September. An exploratory paper by the Left, the Greens and the Social Democrats says police staffing will not be cut and the domestic intelligence agency will not be abolished. The Left had pledged in its manifesto to halt further police "armament."
