Augsburg defender Juma Bah was racially abused and threatened with death online after a 1-1 draw with Union Berlin. “Today our player Juma Bah was racially abused in the most disgusting way on Instagram and threatened with death,” FC Augsburg said Saturday night. His family was also threatened, the club said. “We are shocked by this hatred,” it added, saying it would file a criminal complaint and examine all legal options.

The 20-year-old, on loan from Manchester City since September, was sent off in the 63rd minute for a foul on András Schäfer. Captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw posted a photo of Bah with the words “NO to racism.” Union Berlin shared the statement, commenting: “Important statement!”

The match itself was eventful. Union played with 10 men from the 19th minute after Felix Uduokhai was sent off for denying Michael Gregoritsch a clear scoring chance. Han-Noah Massengo headed Augsburg in front in the 71st minute before Janik Haberer equalized three minutes later. Union visits 1. FC Köln in the second round of the German Cup on Tuesday.
