Pawel Pawlikowski's "Fatherland," which earned the Polish director a shared best director prize at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, opened in theaters in the United Kingdom and Ireland on Oct. 23. In the U.S., distributor MUBI released the film the same day in New York and Los Angeles, with other cities to follow. MUBI also released a new clip from the film.
Set in the summer of 1949, the film follows writer Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler), returning to Germany after 16 years in exile, as he travels with his daughter Erika (Sandra Hüller) from U.S.-dominated Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar. August Diehl plays Klaus Mann. The film has been playing in German theaters since Sept. 3, released by Neue Visionen as "Vaterland."
Poland has submitted "Fatherland" for the Oscar for international feature film. The Academy plans to announce its 15-film shortlist Dec. 15, with nominations to follow Jan. 21, 2027.
