A police officer was injured early Saturday at a hotel in Berlin's Lichtenberg district. According to police, a 47-year-old guest insulted and threatened two hotel employees at around 4:45 a.m. He was accompanied by his 17-year-old son and a woman, and all three were banned from the premises in the presence of officers.

The son later returned with several cans of beer for his father, police said. When an officer told him to stop, the 17-year-old allegedly struck him in the face with a can without warning. Both father and son were taken to the ground and restrained, with the father putting up considerable resistance. Breath tests showed about 2 per mille of alcohol for each.

The officer was treated at a hospital as an outpatient and was unable to continue his shift. Father and son were released after blood samples were taken on the orders of prosecutors. A specialist unit of the eastern police directorate is investigating assault and resisting officers, insult and threats.
