The company behind the open-source vector database Chroma has signed a definitive agreement to join AI coding platform Replit, Chroma CEO Jeff Huber said. Replit confirmed the move on X. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The two companies plan to build a “context layer” for AI agents that draw on a company’s internal knowledge. Chroma says its software is downloaded about 6 million times a month and has nearly 30,000 GitHub stars; customers include Retool, Paramount and CoreWeave.

Chroma Cloud will be wound down over 60 days: according to Runtime Wire, it stops accepting writes on Nov. 22 and reads on Dec. 22. ChromaDB continues under the Apache 2.0 license, and Chroma has added previously private code to the repository.
