The Portuguese Football Federation opened disciplinary proceedings against Cristiano Ronaldo, classed the case as urgent and provisionally suspended the 41-year-old after he left the national team camp during the international break following a playing-time dispute with coach Jorge Jesus. Under federation rules, an unjustified absence carries a ban of one to six months plus a fine.
Ronaldo warmed up but was not brought on against Norway. "I have already apologized, but I know that actions must have consequences," he wrote on social media, adding that he is not retiring from international football. Portugal won all three games without him.
Federation president Pedro Proença has said he wants the captain back for November, according to reports. Portugal host Denmark on Nov. 14 and face Wales on Nov. 17 in the Nations League.
