Real Madrid beat Villarreal 1-0 in the eighth round of La Liga on Saturday. Yan Diomande scored his first goal for the club at the Santiago Bernabéu in the second half from a Federico Valverde pass, after an offside call was overturned by video review.

Vinícius Júnior also scored shortly afterward, but the goal was ruled out after a video review: the Brazilian had pulled Nathan Saliba's hair and was shown a straight red card. Real played the closing stages with 10 men. Midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni told Real Madrid TV that he did not understand what was going on with the referees.

Coach José Mourinho did not attend the postgame news conference. According to sports daily Marca, he said he wanted to be on the bench for the upcoming games against Sevilla and Barcelona. Leaders Barcelona have 24 points from eight wins in eight games.
