The DAX benchmark index (Germany's 40 largest listed companies) closed Friday, 9 October, up 1.13% at 25,087.27 points on Xetra. Over the week it was still down about 0.6%. On Thursday the DAX briefly fell below 25,000 points, its lowest level since 23 July. The MDAX of mid-sized companies lost about 1.5% over the week, the TecDAX technology index about 2.5% and the SDAX about 0.4% (our own calculation from rounded closing levels). The Euro Stoxx 50 closed at 6,173.37 points, about 1% lower on the week.

Oil and bonds dominated. The conflict between the US and Iran is keeping oil prices high, and bond yields in the euro area and the US are close to their highs. A Helaba analyst expects the tension to last at least until the US midterm elections in early November. On top of that, SpaceX plans to become a US mobile operator, which hit Deutsche Telekom, the parent of T-Mobile US.

According to finanzen.net's weekly ranking (Xetra prices from 2 to 9 October), Zalando was the DAX's biggest winner at +6.9%, ahead of Brenntag, Scout24 and SAP. Infineon (−8.9%) and Deutsche Telekom (−7.0%) lost the most.

Coming up (12–16 October): on Tuesday, the second release of German consumer prices for September and results from JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs; on Wednesday, US inflation and results from Bank of America and Morgan Stanley; on Thursday, US retail sales; on Friday, euro-area inflation. The ZEW index (sentiment among financial experts) is not due until 20 October, and there is no ECB meeting this week.
