Wall Street: a record week lifts the S&P 500; banks and inflation data up next
The S&P 500 gained 1.2% over the week, the Dow 0.9% and the Nasdaq 0.6%, while the Russell 2000 lost 0.9%. JPMorgan and other big banks report from Tuesday; US inflation data follow on Wednesday.

Weekly tally according to AP (closes on Friday 9 October): the S&P 500 rose 88.82 points or 1.2% to 7,811.54. The Dow Jones added 477.99 points (0.9%) to 51,654.95 and the Nasdaq Composite 175.31 points (0.6%) to 27,366.17. The Russell 2000 (about 2,000 smaller US firms), however, lost 25.91 points (0.9%) to 2,806.98. Year to date the S&P 500 is up 14.1%, the Nasdaq 17.7% and the Dow 7.5%.
What drove the week: on Tuesday the S&P 500 set a record close, its first since mid-August. It slipped on Wednesday and Thursday before rising 0.6% on Friday. Pressure came from bonds: the 10-year Treasury yield stood at 5.24% on Friday, having recently hit its highest level since 2002, on worries about high inflation and US debt. Oil stays expensive because of the war with Iran: Brent ended at $104.72 a barrel and WTI at $91.85. Gold (December futures) rose 1.43% on Friday to $4,216.30 an ounce.
Friday's big story was SpaceX, which is buying low-band spectrum (radio frequencies for mobile networks) for its Starlink Mobile service. T-Mobile lost 13.3%, AT&T 9.8% and Verizon 8.7%, while tower owners Crown Castle and American Tower gained 15.6% and 9.3%. The deal still needs regulatory approval.
The week of 12–16 October: on Monday (Columbus Day) stock exchanges trade normally, but the US bond market is closed. On Tuesday JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Wells Fargo report, kicking off the third-quarter earnings season. Wednesday brings September consumer prices (inflation) plus results from Morgan Stanley and Bank of America; a Reuters poll expects annual inflation of about 3.6%. Thursday has producer prices and retail sales, and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh is due to speak.
