A 49-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries after being punched in Berlin's Köpenick district early Sunday, police said. According to a police spokesman, he and an 18-year-old had apparently bumped into each other by accident. "The two then got into an argument over it," the spokesman was quoted as saying by the Berliner Zeitung.
The younger man allegedly punched the older man, who fell, struck his head on the ground and lost consciousness. He was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Witnesses held the suspect until officers arrived. He was released after his identity was established and told police he had felt threatened by the older man. The investigation is ongoing. The incident capped a violent weekend in the German capital that also saw stabbings in the Hohenschönhausen and Wedding districts.
