US Justice Department: over 400 noncitizens registered to vote in Washington

Days before the midterms, the administration makes new allegations of illegal voter registration. Critics see an effort to sow doubt about the vote. The claims have not been independently verified.

The US Justice Department says it has identified more than 400 noncitizens registered to vote in Washington state. Some of them voted in multiple elections and many are green card holders, the responsible US attorney's offices said on Monday, according to Fox News. 'This is only the tip of the iceberg,' said Neil Floyd, acting US attorney for the Western District of Washington. The figures could not immediately be independently verified, and it is unclear whether or how many charges will follow.

The allegations come as the administration steps up pressure on election authorities. According to Reuters, it has issued more than 100 subpoenas to election officials in at least a dozen states, seeking records on tens of thousands of voters. On Tuesday a judge appeared sceptical of a department request to block California from counting mail ballots from more than 20,000 registered voters the administration alleges are noncitizens. Trump continues to falsely claim his 2020 defeat was the result of fraud. In Ohio on Wednesday he accused opponents of voter ID requirements of wanting to 'cheat'.
