Liverpool beat Chelsea in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, winning 6-5 on penalties at Anfield after a 1-1 draw after extra time. Chelsea's Wesley Fofana missed the decisive kick.
Both goals came from the spot before half-time. Morgan Rogers put Chelsea ahead in the 40th minute after Ryan Gravenberch fouled Moisés Caicedo in the box. Three minutes later Cody Gakpo equalised from the spot after Fofana handled a corner. Florian Wirtz, brought on around the hour mark, later wasted a good chance from close range.
In the shootout, Liverpool's Kostas Tsimikas fired over and Gravenberch also failed to score. For Chelsea, Valentin Barco hit the post and Emmanuel Emegha was denied by goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. Wirtz converted his kick before Fofana missed with the 16th penalty of the shootout.
