Romania's National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) has detained the mayor of the spa town of Slănic Moldova in Bacău County on bribery charges. According to investigators, on Tuesday, October 27, he accepted €6,000 from a representative of a company holding a contract with the town hall. The DNA says he was caught in the act.
Prosecutors say it was another instalment: the mayor allegedly received €15,000 on July 23, bringing the total to €21,000. According to the DNA, the case concerns a 2025 services contract worth 1,464,349.43 lei for emergency work to restore the drinking-water supply. The payments are said to relate to the award, extension and execution of the contract.
The mayor was due to appear before the Bucharest Tribunal on Wednesday, with the DNA requesting 30 days of pre-trial detention. The DNA stresses that bringing charges is a procedural step and does not override the presumption of innocence. The allegations are unproven.
