Microsoft has put a figure on how much revenue it earns from OpenAI: from July to September, its business with the ChatGPT maker brought in $10 billion, including revenue-sharing payments. That is according to a regulatory filing submitted to the US Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday, reported by TechCrunch. With total revenue of $92.3 billion, it amounts to almost 11 percent.
For the whole of fiscal 2026, Microsoft's revenue from OpenAI was $24.1 billion; at the current pace it would be around $40 billion a year. The filing does not say how much comes from revenue sharing and how much from cloud services. Receivables from OpenAI – amounts OpenAI still owes for past transactions – rose to $7.2 billion at the end of September from $6 billion at the end of June.
At the same time, Microsoft's stake in OpenAI fell from about 25 percent in June to 24 percent in September; after OpenAI's recapitalisation in October 2025 it had been around 27 percent. Microsoft did not give a reason for the dilution. Under an April 2026 agreement, OpenAI will keep sharing revenue with Microsoft until 2030, subject to a cap, and may also work with rival cloud providers. The two companies increasingly compete for the same customers.
