Visitors to Machu Picchu should soon be able to secure their tickets much earlier. According to business daily Gestión (Oct. 25, 2026), Peru's Culture Minister Alberto Beingolea told broadcaster Canal N in an interview that tickets will be sold up to a year in advance. "I estimate that in three weeks we will be ready," he said. At present, only tickets for the current year are available. Payment is to run through a system of the state-owned Banco de la Nación without commissions. It is meant to allow all available daily tickets to be sold and to record actual sales and attendance; according to Gestión, the previous system allowed tickets to be blocked and then go unused.
Visitor numbers are capped. Under the 2026 rules reported by the state news agency Andina, 5,600 people a day may enter the site on high-season days – including the period from June 19 to November 2 – and 4,500 on all other days. Some routes, such as the Inca Bridge and the Huchuy Picchu trail, are open only in high season. Tickets are sold exclusively through the official platform tuboleto.cultura.pe, and valid ID must be shown at the entrance.
According to UNESCO, the Inca city lies at about 2,430 metres amid tropical mountain forest and was probably the most amazing urban creation of the Inca Empire. The Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu has been a World Heritage site since 1983 – a mixed site recognised for both culture and nature. According to the Natural World Heritage Sites portal, it stretches from the snow-capped summit of Salcantay (6,241 metres) down to cloud and subtropical humid forests at 1,850 metres; 423 bird species have been recorded there.
