A taxi driver was killed in a crash in Berlin's Mitte district early Thursday. At around 12:30 a.m., his vehicle collided with another car on Torstrasse heading toward Friedrichstrasse. Police said the driver was trapped and so badly injured that he died at the scene despite resuscitation attempts.

The 38-year-old driver of the other car suffered fractures to his shoulder and ankle, and his 29-year-old female passenger was also taken to hospital, the dpa news agency reported, citing police. Police measured a breath alcohol level of about 1.6 per mille in the 38-year-old, according to dpa. Police said it was still unclear exactly how the collision happened, and the investigation is ongoing.

Torstrasse was temporarily closed between Tucholskystrasse and Friedrichstrasse during the rescue operation and has since reopened.
