Two young men triggered another large-scale police search in the Bavarian town of Dingolfing on Tuesday, a day after a 43-year-old man was shot dead at his front door there, police said. The pair stopped in a car outside the scene and made remarks to a relative of the victim that could be understood as a threat. The family alerted police, who deployed numerous patrol cars and a helicopter.
About an hour later, officers found the car. Its occupants, aged 18 and 17, were taken into custody. They said they had found their behavior "funny." Police described them as copycats, saying a link to Monday's killing could not initially be ruled out. It was not immediately known whether the two would face legal consequences.
On Monday, an unknown person rang the doorbell of the home and, after a brief conversation at the door, shot the 43-year-old, who died at the scene. The attacker probably fled in a black car with tinted windows, police said. Criminal police in Landshut have set up a special unit of about 30 officers. The motive and sequence of events are unclear, and there are no concrete leads on the attacker so far, a police spokesperson said. Investigators have appealed for information, particularly about sightings on Monday between 12:00 and 12:30 p.m.
