The derby between 1. FC Köln and Schalke 04 ended goalless on Saturday. In the 38th minute, Cologne's Germany international Said El Mala pushed Soufiane El-Faouzi in an aerial duel, Geissblog reports, sending him into his team-mate Robin Gosens. Both Schalke players had to be substituted. El Mala told Sky: "I am incredibly sorry about the collision." On Instagram he wrote that the challenge was "at no point my intention".
According to Geissblog, El Mala received severe abuse from Schalke fans on social media. Former referee Manuel Gräfe said a yellow card would have been appropriate, but not a red. In first-half stoppage time, El Mala missed a good chance from eight metres.
Player of the match in the bundesliga.com fan vote was Schalke goalkeeper Loris Karius, who denied Ísak Jóhannesson and Marius Bülter among others. Before Klopp's first squad announcement in September, Karius had been mentioned as one of the possible goalkeeping candidates. The video of the post-match press conference comes from the YouTube channel 1. FC Köln.
