AfD co-leader Alice Weidel said U.S. President Donald Trump's diesel arrangement with Russia should be a model for Germany. "We want a diesel deal too, for the Germans, for our country, for Germany," she told reporters in Berlin on Tuesday. "And that is why we have to sit down at the table." She called Trump's course "a right path" and "very pragmatic," saying the U.S. was striking deals for its consumers "while we are left behind here."

After a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump said more than 300,000 tons of diesel would be made available "immediately" for the U.S. and the world market. The EU criticized the arrangement. The German government said on Friday it was sticking to sanctions on Russia and that Germany does not depend on Russian oil. Weidel described Germany's Ukraine policy as a failure.
