A police officer shot a driver with his service weapon in Berlin's Mitte district on Tuesday evening. Police said officers stopped the car at around 9 p.m. after a chase, at the junction of Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse and Spandauer Strasse near Alexanderplatz. During the subsequent check, one officer fired his weapon and hit the driver in the leg.

The man was taken to a hospital; a police spokesperson said his life was not in danger. Police had stopped the vehicle on suspicion of hit-and-run and drunk driving, and witnesses had earlier seen the car involved in at least one accident. Why the officer fired was initially unclear. Criminal investigators have taken over the case; the driver is presumed innocent.
