Former WBO super welterweight champion Tim Tszyu will fight for the WBA middleweight title in Australia. His opponent is champion Erislandy Lara, who has held the belt since 2021 and defended it successfully four times. Date, city, venue, ticketing and broadcast details are to be announced in the coming weeks, FightNews reported.
Tszyu (28-3, 18 KOs) is on a three-fight winning streak, most recently a decision over Errol Spence Jr. in July in Sydney. Lara (32-3-3, 19 KOs) is described as boxing's oldest reigning world champion and has never been stopped. A win would make Tszyu a two-weight world champion; his father Kostya won all his world titles at 140 pounds.
"Spence was just the appetiser," Tszyu said of his move to middleweight, according to FightNews. George Rose, chief executive of No Limit Boxing, said: "Tim wanted him and called for him by name." Former three-weight world champion Jeff Fenech is in Tszyu's corner as head trainer.
