The European Commission welcomed the US-announced "energy ceasefire" between Russia and Ukraine but said it saw no sign that Moscow was observing it. A spokesperson said in Brussels on Monday that the Commission had no information beyond the US announcement, the BTA news agency reported. Strikes continued over the weekend. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he is ready to observe the truce.

The Commission also reaffirmed its stance on Russian energy: Europe is ending its dependence on Russian fossil fuels and does not want to help finance the war by buying them, the spokesperson said. The EU will keep working with its partners and the United States to end the war. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas struck a similar note at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg: "We haven't yet seen that also Russia will stick to it." U.S. President Donald Trump announced the truce in a social media post on Sunday.
