Apprentices in Germany are far more likely than university students to face insults, bullying and violence, according to a survey. Forty-two percent of apprentices said they had experienced or witnessed insults or verbal abuse, compared with 23% of students. The Forsa poll was commissioned by the German Social Accident Insurance, DGUV, and obtained by the dpa news agency.

Twenty-eight percent of apprentices and 12% of students reported bullying or prolonged exclusion. Violence or physical assault was cited by 14% of apprentices but only 3% of students. The survey gives no further details on the incidents of violence.

At the same time, apprentices feel better prepared for a safe working life: 91% have heard about accident prevention and health protection, compared with 53% of students. Seventy-two percent of apprentices consider themselves well or very well prepared, against 40% of students.
