Living costs in Germany rose noticeably again in September. According to the flash estimate published by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Sept. 30, consumer prices were 3.3% higher than a year earlier and 0.6% higher than in August. According to its release calendar, the office scheduled final September results for today, Tuesday, Oct. 13; they were not yet available at press time.

Energy is the main driver: according to Destatis, it cost 14.9% more in September than a year earlier, after 10.5% in August and 8.3% in July. Food prices, by contrast, rose just 0.4%. Goods overall were 3.8% more expensive, services 2.7%.

So-called core inflation, excluding food and energy, was unchanged at 2.4%, according to the flash estimate. For households, this means that those who spend heavily on heating, fuel or electricity are currently feeling price increases far more than at the supermarket checkout.
