Wall Street mixed as chip stocks slide; Kospi plunges 7% on Tuesday
Dow +0.4%, S&P 500 −0.1%, Nasdaq −0.4%: oil rose after attacks on Saudi Arabia while memory-chip stocks fell. Asia drops sharply on Tuesday morning, and the big banks report today.

Monday, 12 October (Columbus Day – stocks traded, bond market closed): the Dow Jones rose 0.4% (+195.60 points) to 51,850.55, the S&P 500 slipped 0.1% to 7,807.24, staying close to last week's record, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.4% to 27,245.90. The Russell 2000 (smaller firms) lost 0.4% to 2,794.48. According to AP, about 60% of S&P 500 stocks rose, but the big technology companies dragged the market lower.
What moved markets: memory-chip makers fell after reports that Chinese rival CXMT reported progress on a new memory design. Micron lost 3.9%, AMD 2.7% and Nvidia 1.2%; Sandisk fell more than 6% and Lumentum almost 10% (Motley Fool). Communication stocks led: Meta rose 3.2% after launching its new AI model Muse, while Verizon (+2.5%), T-Mobile (+2.4%) and AT&T (+1.5%) recovered from Friday's slump. Salesforce gained after a double upgrade from Bank of America. Chipotle lost 3.75% after Starbucks denied it wants to buy the company.
Oil climbed: Brent settled 1.8% higher at $106.65 a barrel, its highest since 15 September, and WTI rose 2% to $93.74 (Reuters). The drivers were a Houthi-claimed strike on Riyadh's international airport on Saturday that killed 13 people, further attacks on Sunday and strikes on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump's Russian diesel deal and the announced halt to attacks on energy sites between Russia and Ukraine only partly offset the rise. Gold (December futures) fell 0.6% to $4,190.60. There is no Monday close for the 10-year Treasury yield because of the holiday: the last value is 5.24% from Friday; in Asian trading on Tuesday it is around 5.20% (Reuters).
Tuesday morning: Asia tumbles. South Korea's Kospi is down 7.4% at 5,914.35 points (Samsung −7.7%, SK Hynix −8.8%), Japan's Nikkei 225 is down 2.5% and the Hang Seng 1% (AP, about 05:24 Berlin time). Nasdaq 100 futures are down 0.8%, S&P 500 futures 0.2%, while Dow futures are up 0.2% (Investing.com, 05:12). JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Wells Fargo report before today's opening bell. On Wednesday at 14:30 Berlin time comes September US consumer price inflation (CPI); forecasts are 3.6% year on year after 3.4% in August.
