Alexander Zverev celebrated his rise to No. 1 with a show of force. In the Erste Bank Open quarter-finals the top seed beat Britain's Arthur Fery 6-0, 6-2 in 58 minutes, according to tennisnet.com. He took the first set in 25 minutes and closed out the second with an ace. It was a rematch of the Wimbledon semi-final, which Zverev won in three sets.
In Saturday's semi-final Zverev meets fifth seed Alex de Minaur of Australia, who beat Matteo Berrettini 7-6(4), 6-2, according to Reuters. The other semi-final pits Carlos Alcaraz against Daniil Medvedev. Alcaraz beat Tommy Paul 6-4, 7-6(2), saving all five break points he faced, while Medvedev beat Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-3.
That puts three of the top four seeds into the Vienna semi-finals. Zverev replaces Jannik Sinner at the top of the rankings on Monday, 2 November, becoming only the second German world No. 1 after Boris Becker.
