Online prices in Germany can change within a few hours. Germany's consumer advice centers (Verbraucherzentralen) said in guidance updated on Oct. 22, 2026, as reported by Verbraucherschutzforum, that shoppers can pay different amounts for the same product depending on when they buy. As an example, they cited car tires and batteries at the auto service chain ATU, where some prices in the morning were up to 30% higher than the previous afternoon, according to the consumer centers.
Dynamic pricing is generally legal in Germany, but there are rules. If a retailer advertises a price reduction, it must be measured against the lowest total price of the previous 30 days under the Price Indication Ordinance (Section 11 PAngV). If a price is personalized based on automated decision-making, the retailer must disclose this before purchase under the Introductory Act to the Civil Code (Article 246a EGBGB).
The consumer centers advise comparing several reputable sellers, checking total prices including shipping, and, without time pressure, watching prices over several days. The issue weighs on household budgets at a time when German inflation stood at 3.3% in September 2026, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).
