Win or lose, Netanyahu could stay in power for months
As caretaker prime minister he would keep broad powers, including approving military action. Analysts link this to a possible renewed war with Iran.

Whatever the final results, Benjamin Netanyahu could remain prime minister for months. "There is no new government in Israel the day after the election," Yossi Mekelberg of the British think tank Chatham House told Euronews. A caretaker government keeps substantial powers, including authority to approve military action. Official results are expected on Nov. 4, after which the designated candidate has up to 42 days to form a cabinet.
The election came a week before the U.S. midterms amid speculation that Washington and Israel could resume strikes on Iran. Mekelberg suggested the timing of any renewed confrontation could depend on political developments in both countries. Three years after the Oct. 7 attack, Israel still has no independent state commission of inquiry. An opposition-led government would likely cooperate more closely with international efforts on Gaza.
