Road deaths in Bulgaria are declining but remain well above the EU average, according to a European Commission report presented on Tuesday and reported by the BTA news agency. In 2024, Bulgaria recorded 74 deaths per million inhabitants, down from 93 in 2014. The EU average fell from 56 to 44 over the same period.

That gives Bulgaria the second-highest rate in the EU after Romania, with 78 deaths per million. Sweden and Denmark had the safest roads. Across the EU, 19,350 people were killed in 2024, 3% fewer than the year before, and more than 1.15 million were injured.

According to the report, more member states have recorded annual reductions of over 5% since the beginning of 2025. The figures come in a week in which the case over a crash near Pleven that killed four people has drawn renewed attention.
