The global build-out of energy storage continues to accelerate. New installed capacity will grow 45% in 2026 to 188 gigawatts, or 535 gigawatt hours, according to a new forecast by research firm BloombergNEF reported by trade portal SolarQuarter. Annual additions are expected to exceed 209 gigawatts in 2027 – a new record.

China, the United States and Australia together account for more than 60% of global installations. According to the forecast, however, the market is gradually expanding beyond these regions: several countries in Europe as well as in the Middle East, Latin America and Southeast Asia are stepping up investment in storage to make their grids more flexible. Batteries absorb surplus power from solar and wind plants and feed it back into the grid when needed.
