A union representing workers at US memory chipmaker Micron in Taoyuan, Taiwan, plans to strike on Thursday, Reuters reported. The walkout coincides with a mediation meeting between Micron and a second union at its Taichung operations, which the strikers say they are backing. The union has not said how long the strike will last and plans to give details on Thursday.

At the heart of the dispute are bonuses. The union wants a concrete profit-sharing plan giving employees 15 percent of operating profit. Taiwan staff had been set to receive a cash bonus of one million Taiwan dollars (about $31,000). According to the union, 1,994 members, or 99 percent of those who voted, backed strike action. Mediation ended without agreement in September.

Taoyuan is one of Micron's most important manufacturing hubs, producing DRAM and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips used in AI servers. Micron employs about 15,000 people in Taiwan and says it has invested more than T$1.6 trillion ($49 billion) there. President Lai Ching-te urged both sides last week to negotiate sincerely. Any impact on production remains unclear.
