Microsoft on Tuesday showcased how French building materials group Saint-Gobain is using the Microsoft Discovery AI platform in materials research. Teams of AI agents, guided by experts, analyse existing knowledge and generate hypotheses. The goal is new additives that allow less clinker to be used in cement production – according to Microsoft, cement accounts for around seven per cent of global CO₂ emissions.

For the project, the system analysed 62,000 patents and 44,000 abstracts of scientific papers. According to Saint-Gobain, building this knowledge base took only a few hours instead of about a year, and the hypothesis stage around six weeks. Saint-Gobain was already using the platform in March 2026 as one of the first customers of a limited private release.

The proposed molecules are currently being tested in the lab; no measurement data or proven CO₂ savings have been published yet. A video on Microsoft’s official channel presents the project.
