The DAX benchmark index (Germany's 40 largest listed companies) closed 1.18% lower at 25,319.77 points on Monday. On Friday it had climbed to almost 25,700 points. The MDAX of mid-sized companies lost 0.47% and the Euro Stoxx 50 of large euro-area companies 0.96%. The tech index TecDAX slipped slightly, while the SDAX of smaller companies edged up. According to dpa-AFX, the DAX just held its 21-day line, a short-term moving average of prices.

According to dpa-AFX, traders cited the situation in the Middle East and caution ahead of quarterly results from SAP, Tesla, Meta and SpaceX. The DAX did not benefit from a recovery in US tech stocks in the afternoon. According to Dow Jones, unrest in France also weighed on sentiment: the yield premium of French 10-year government bonds over German ones rose to 145 basis points (134 on Friday at midday).

RWE (−3.2%), Rheinmetall (−2.8%) and Deutsche Bank (−2.8%) were at the bottom of the DAX. According to Dow Jones, defence stocks gave back part of Friday's gains, also weighed by speculation about a summit of Trump, Putin and Xi on Ukraine. DHL fell 0.9% despite a higher profit forecast, and Vonovia 1.5% on worries about a possible socialisation of housing in Berlin. Zalando (+2.6%), Symrise and VW preference shares led the gainers.

For Tuesday, broker IG expects a start about 0.5% lower at 25,199 points, according to dpa-AFX (6:45), roughly at Monday's low. The ZEW economic sentiment index is due at 11:00, Deutsche Börse's quarterly results at 19:00, and Netflix and SpaceX in the evening. The ECB's euro reference rate was 1.1225 dollars on Monday (Friday: 1.1253).
