Berlin's homicide squad is appealing for witnesses after an alleged attempted killing in the Kreuzberg district early Saturday. Two suspects aged 25 and 33 were detained near the scene, but at least two more remain unidentified, police and prosecutors said in a joint statement.

A dispute among several people outside a late-night convenience store escalated at about 2:35 a.m. Police said a 28-year-old man was knocked to the ground and then allegedly punched and kicked by several people. He suffered severe head injuries, had to be resuscitated and remains in life-threatening condition, according to police. A 24-year-old companion was slightly injured.

The suspects allegedly arrived shortly before the attack in a black or dark-colored car. Investigators are asking anyone who saw the vehicle, its license plate or occupants, or who has photos or video, to come forward; material can be uploaded anonymously via a police portal. All suspects are presumed innocent.
