At least 53 people were killed on Monday when Iran-backed Houthi rebels fired missiles at a training centre for Yemeni government forces. More than 200 were wounded, the Shabwa provincial government said. According to the authorities, three ballistic missiles struck the centre on the outskirts of the provincial capital Ataq, where new internal security recruits were being trained. Officials warned the toll could rise.
The Houthis claimed the attack. A spokesman alleged the camp was run by Saudi officers, some of whom he said were killed, but offered no evidence. The provincial government called it an “extremely critical military escalation” and asked for air defence and early-warning systems. Presidential Leadership Council chairman Rashad al-Alimi ordered care for the wounded and promised a “firm response”.
The attack is part of a wider front in the Iran war that has shattered a 2022 truce. Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree also claimed six attacks on targets in Saudi Arabia within 48 hours, including Riyadh's international airport, CBS News reported. Government spokesman Col. Majed al-Nazili said government forces had killed 558 Houthi fighters in 24 hours; the claim could not be independently verified.
