Wall Street: futures rebound as Netflix, Tesla and Meta earnings week begins
After the worst week since June, Nasdaq futures are up about 1%. Oil is cheaper after Trump eased sanctions on Russia. Asian markets start the week lower.

US futures pointed to a rebound on Sunday evening and Monday morning. According to Investing.com, S&P 500 futures were up 0.5% at 7,739.75 points at 21:10 New York time and Nasdaq 100 futures up 1% at 29,686.75. By 23:30 ET StockTwits reported the S&P 500 up 0.8%, the Nasdaq more than 1% and the Dow 0.5%. A future is a bet on a later price – it shows sentiment before trading opens at 15:30 CEST. On Friday the S&P 500 closed at 7,659.44 (−1.1%) and the Nasdaq at 26,140.03 (−2.1%); the Philadelphia chip index lost 11.4% over the week (Reuters).
Asia, however, started weakly: Japan's Nikkei fell between 1.2% and 2% depending on the Reuters update, after a 5.4% drop last week, and Taiwan lost 1.4%. Investors are asking how AI firms will fund their huge spending – Goldman Sachs expects the five biggest cloud 'hyperscalers' to invest about $1.2 trillion next year. China reported third-quarter growth of 4.5%.
Oil is cheaper: Brent fell 1.7% to $107.95 a barrel and WTI 0.8% to $100.62 (Reuters). The reason: President Trump decided to waive some sanctions and tariffs on Russia, which could bring more Russian fuel to market – he later said no final decision had been made. Meanwhile Iran reported that another tanker had hit a mine in the Strait of Hormuz. The 10-year US Treasury yield fell 4 basis points to about 5.05%, and gold rose 0.4% to about $4,181 an ounce.
Big results are due this week: Netflix and SpaceX on Tuesday evening, Tesla and Meta on Wednesday evening along with Lam Research and Texas Instruments. According to CMC Markets, analysts expect quarterly revenue of about $63.3 billion at Meta and $27.9 billion at Tesla. Data: housing starts on Tuesday, jobless claims on Thursday, flash PMIs and consumer sentiment on Friday. The Fed meets on 27–28 October and its officials are silent until then.
