Hungarian energy group MOL is building its first biomethane plant. The facility in Szarvas, Békés county, in southeast Hungary near the Romanian border, costs more than 2.7 billion forints (7.4 million euros). The project was announced during European Biomethane Week in Brussels.

The plant is to produce more than 7 million cubic metres of biomethane a year, replacing the same volume of natural gas and enough for about 8,500 average households. The purified gas can be injected into the natural gas grid. The technology is supplied by Italy's Gruppo AB. MOL acquired the Szarvas biogas plant in 2023; it processes more than 40,000 tonnes of meat-industry waste a year.

Under the REPowerEU plan, the EU aims to produce 35 billion cubic metres of biomethane a year by 2030. Capacity grew 17% in the year to mid-June 2026, reaching 8.2 billion cubic metres. “We are convinced that the green transition and competitiveness are not conflicting objectives,” said MOL Chief Strategy Officer György Bacsa.
