Wall Street: tech lifts Nasdaq 1.1% while Dow slips slightly
Chip and AI stocks recover after a rough week, but most other shares fall. The 10-year US Treasury yield climbs to 5.14%. Netflix reports results this evening.

On Monday the Nasdaq Composite rose 1.11% to 26,430.89 points and the S&P 500 gained 0.41% to 7,690.73, while the Dow Jones lost 0.07% to 51,966.03 (AP). The rally was narrow: according to AP, most stocks outside artificial intelligence (AI) and tech fell. Only 4 of the 11 sectors in the S&P 500 finished higher (HDFC Sky). The Philadelphia chip index (SOX) gained 1.61%, ending an eight-day losing streak with a combined drop of about 15.7% – its longest since October 2008 (Reuters).
Gainers included Western Digital (+6.1%), Sandisk (+5.5%), Amazon (+5.0% after Morgan Stanley named it a 'top pick'), Tesla (+3.8% ahead of Wednesday's results), Intel (+2.4% after a J.P. Morgan upgrade) and Nvidia (+1.4%). Cleveland-Cliffs jumped more than 16% after what its CEO called the strongest quarter in three years. Banks fell – Wells Fargo 2.5%, JPMorgan 1.8% – and utilities lost almost 2%. The reason is higher yields: they make borrowing dearer and dividend stocks less attractive.
The 10-year US Treasury yield rose to 5.14% from 5.09% on Friday (AP). The yield is the annual interest the government pays on new debt – when it rises, borrowing gets more expensive for everyone, including for costly data centres. European bond prices also fell after violent protests in France, and many European stock indexes lost more than 1%. US crude WTI rose 2.2% to $103.66 a barrel, while Brent slipped 0.3% to $109.55 despite Houthi claims of attacks on Saudi sites (Reuters). Gold fell 0.5% to $4,143.91 an ounce.
On Tuesday morning US futures were slightly higher: Dow up 0.1%, Nasdaq 100 up 0.2% (IC Markets, 07:15 CEST). Asia was lower – South Korea's Kospi fell 2.8% and Japan's Nikkei 0.6% (AP). General Motors reports before the open today, with Netflix, SpaceX and United Airlines after the close. Analysts expect Netflix revenue of about $12.87 billion (MarketBeat). Housing starts data is due at 14:30 CEST.
