David Benavidez has written off a fight with Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez. “I think honestly I could say with confidence that that fight is never going to happen,” the WBA and WBO cruiserweight champion said on Brian Custer’s The Last Stand podcast, as reported by Excélsior and Boxing News 24. He no longer wanted to disrespect Canelo: “He’s a great fighter. He’s a legend.”
Benavidez has not fought at super middleweight since 2023 and now competes two divisions higher. Next he faces WBC cruiserweight champion Michał Cieślak; according to Boxing News 24 he also has Jai Opetaia, Artur Beterbiev and a move up to heavyweight against Oleksandr Usyk in mind.
Canelo challenges WBC champion Christian Mbilli for the super middleweight title in Riyadh on 31 October. According to Excélsior, he has not yet responded to Benavidez’s remarks.
