Autumn is reaching the Grand Canyon: according to the foliage forecast by More Than Just Parks (18.10.2026), colours in the national park should peak around 21 October. Mesa Verde National Park is also forecast to peak on 21 October and Shenandoah National Park on 20 October. The publishers stress that every date is a forecast and advise checking conditions with the land manager before travelling.
For visitors, autumn also means the end of the season in places. According to the US National Park Service (update of 17.10.2026), Desert View Campground on the South Rim is open until 18 October. On the North Rim, the roads to Cape Royal and Point Imperial are closed for repairs until 3 November, and there is no water this season. The North Kaibab Trail has been closed since a flash flood on 29 August, and Phantom Ranch at the canyon floor is closed until further notice.
Stage 4 water restrictions apply on the South Rim, with Mather and Desert View campgrounds dry camping only. Mather Campground is open year-round and the visitor center daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Campfires are allowed only in designated fire rings in maintained campgrounds and never below the rim; at Mather and Desert View, wood fires are banned because of the water restrictions.
