Bayer Leverkusen handed SC Freiburg their first Bundesliga defeat of the season on Sunday, winning 2-1 in front of a sell-out crowd of 30,210 at the BayArena. Derry Scherhant put Freiburg ahead in the 14th minute before Ibrahim Maza levelled five minutes later from a Patrik Schick pass. Schick struck the winner in the 76th minute.

Schick became the first Leverkusen player to score in each of the opening six matchdays of a Bundesliga season, surpassing Dimitar Berbatov and Stefan Kiessling. Early on, Freiburg fans threw tennis balls onto the pitch to protest bans on flags and other materials, and referee Florian Badstuebner halted play for around five minutes. Germany coach Juergen Klopp watched from the stands.

Freiburg lost top spot as Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund moved ahead. Leverkusen drew level on points with Freiburg in fourth place. Bottom side Borussia Moenchengladbach host Hoffenheim at 1530 GMT.
