The DAX benchmark index (Germany's 40 largest listed companies) closed Friday at 25,622.61 points, 2.1% above the previous week. Fears of another US rate hike had eased. The MDAX of mid-sized companies gained about 2.2% over the week and the Euro Stoxx 50 about 0.5%. According to wallstreet-online, Rheinmetall was the week's best DAX stock, up almost 18%, and Infineon the weakest, down about 13%.

On Tuesday comes the ZEW index, which measures the economic expectations of financial experts. Helaba analyst Simon Azarbayjani expects a slight decline, but the recovery signal is likely to remain intact, dpa-AFX reported. In the evening Deutsche Börse publishes its quarterly results, followed on Wednesday evening by software group SAP.

On Thursday many European companies report, including Sartorius, Nestlé, Roche, UniCredit and L'Oréal, and on Friday Volvo, Holcim and Eni. Friday also brings the first October purchasing managers' indices (PMI) for Germany, the euro area and the US. In the US, Netflix, Tesla, IBM and Texas Instruments are among those reporting. There is no ECB rate decision this week; according to the dpa-AFX calendar it is due on 29 October.

Market watchers remain cautious. Andreas Lipkow of CMC Markets sees high energy prices due to the Middle East conflict as a burden. Timo Emden of Captrader doubts there will be a year-end rally.
