OpenAI began rolling out the speech model GPT-Live-1.1 in ChatGPT's voice mode on Thursday, alongside GPT-Live-1.1 Quip, a smaller version of the model. According to the official release notes, accents should sound more natural across languages, and the assistant now uses a wider range of short phrases to signal that it is searching the web.

The update brings new voices for German, French, Hindi, Japanese, Korean and Mexican Spanish, tech site Notebookcheck reports. The German voices are called Sonna and Miko, and English gains a voice named Bubbie. Until now, voice mode offered nine standard English-sounding voices. Users switch under "Voice" in the settings; which voices appear may vary by region and account.

The rollout is gradual and OpenAI has not given an end date. How long users can talk depends on their plan: according to the voice mode information, Plus subscribers get three hours with the full model within a rolling 24-hour window and Go subscribers three hours with Quip, while free users get limited access to the smaller version. For developers, the API voice model remains gpt-live-1 for now.
