Households with gas heating could face noticeably higher costs at the turn of the year. Verivox energy expert Thorsten Storck expects many gas suppliers to raise prices by 10% to 20% in early 2027, depending on the tariff, the Verbraucherschutzforum consumer protection forum reported on Oct. 17, 2026. This is a market assessment, not price increases already announced by all suppliers.
Rising grid fees add to that. For gas, they will increase by an average of about 3% nationwide, according to Verivox calculations, which amounts to around 19 euros more a year for a household consuming 20,000 kilowatt-hours annually. For electricity, grid fees will rise by 1.9% on average, or about 8 euros a year for 4,000 kilowatt-hours. They are expected to rise in western German states and fall slightly in eastern ones; for electricity grid fees, Hamburg is particularly affected, according to the analysis. Another factor is that the federal subsidy for transmission grid costs will fall by almost 1 billion to 5.525 billion euros in 2027.
How much an individual bill rises depends on the supplier, contract, consumption and region. In the case of unilateral price increases, customers may have a special right to cancel, depending on the type of contract. Consumer advocates and comparison portals generally recommend comparing one's own tariff with other offers before new prices take effect.
