Winter in Bulgaria: gas-heated homes face the hardest season, expert says
Former deputy energy minister Yavor Kuyumdzhiev expects no change in household power prices until the end of June 2027. Housing and energy costs are up 5.4% year on year, according to NSI.

Households that heat with natural gas will have the hardest time in Bulgaria this winter, former deputy energy minister Yavor Kuyumdzhiev said in an interview published by BGonAir on 17.10.2026. "The natural gas price has reached levels last seen in mid-2022," he said. Market electricity prices, he added, are chasing records "we haven't seen in at least four years".
For household electricity customers, Kuyumdzhiev does not expect an increase soon: "Until June 30 next year, electricity prices will most likely not change." Nor does he expect district heating prices to rise during the winter, saying he does not believe anyone would decide to raise prices in the middle of a hard winter.
Official data show the pressure on household budgets. According to the National Statistical Institute NSI (14.10.2026), annual inflation stood at 5.7 per cent in September. Costs for housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels were 5.4 per cent higher than a year earlier, and transport 25.9 per cent higher.
